Abstract
This chapter discusses the life cycle thinking of sustainable development in the construction industry. Regarding buildings as a product, the life cycle framework of buildings and building materials are described. The methods of life cycle assessment of building materials are discussed. Taking China as a case study, the embodied environmental impact of consumed building materials in China from 2000 to 2015 are evaluated by using life cycle assessment. Strategies for selecting and applying green building materials are accordingly proposed based on the evaluation result and other research findings. This chapter also reviews the current situation of construction and demolition waste disposal in different countries. Based on the barrier analysis according to the reduce, reuse, recycle principle of Circular Economy, suggestions for improving the efficiency of construction and demolition waste treatment are proposed.
