Abstract
The widespread aquaculture of tilapia, especially in areas outside their natural geographical existence together with the shortage of, and competition for, freshwater sources has gradually shifted tilapia culture from traditional semi-intensive to intensive systems. This chapter highlights the intensive culture of tilapia in earthen ponds, cages, tanks and raceways, green water, recirculating systems and aquaponics systems. The effects of stocking density on tilapia performance in these systems are highlighted. Special emphasis is given to intensive tilapia culture in floating cages in the major producing countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas. Effluent treatment and management in intensive systems, including waste settlement and removal, ammonia and nitrites removal and water exchange are also described.
