Abstract

Many of the positive applications of nanoparticles in domestic items and industrial sectors are being investigated. Although several benefits of nanoparticles have been recorded, it must be acknowledged that the nanoparticles, when used extensively, represent a concern to the environment owing to their overuse. Metal ions and metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) have also found numerous applications in the past decade and are a topic of choice for many young researchers. This chapter reviews the effects of MONPs on the growth and development of plants. Several studies indicate the phytotoxicity caused by MONPs. Growth inhibition, reduced development of roots, generation of reactive oxygen species, cellular damage, and death of plants were the typical problems noticed with most of the nanoparticles. However, some studies have reported positive responses too. These effects are dose-dependent, and vary from plant to plant.
