Abstract
This chapter introduces the Java Data Mining (JDM) application programming interface (API) using a response modeling business problem. The chapter follows the phases of the CRISP-DM methodology to illustrate where the API applies, putting the use of the API in the context of not only solving a data mining problem, but also leveraging its results. These process phases are business understanding, data understanding, data preparation, modeling, model building, model testing, evaluation, and deployment. Although the process phases are not explored in depth, they are enough to give the reader a feel for the same. This chapter also reveals how the notion of lift can be used to assess the quality of a model and how it can impact the selection of a final model or strategy. For model building, there are a couple of JDM artifacts to be aware of. JDM requires a connection to the DME to perform mining. JDM requires the instantiation of a factory object to create a connection.
