Abstract

Publisher Summary As new methods became available for the treatment of emotional disorders, parallel new methods had to be developed to measure the presence and severity of these disorders, and the efficacy of the new treatments. Following the discoveries of antipsychotic drugs, antidepressant drugs, and anti-anxiety drugs came the new science of psychometric scale development to fill the need of evaluating these psychobiological treatments. By adequately identifying and defining behavior, it is hoped to go on to develop more specific and efficacious treatments for disordered behavior that will allow to manipulate the psychological component inherent in health and disease. This chapter provides an overview of diagnostic tools available to assess emotional disturbances, and the signs and symptoms of the most commonly encountered emotional disorders. By using these measures serially over time, as a repeat measure, it becomes possible to evaluate treatment effects quantitatively. The chapter further discusses some methods for generalized and specific evaluation of emotional disturbances. To make quantitative evaluations of psychobiological treatments, the qualitative aspects have to be approached first.
