Abstract
Currently, esophageal hypersensitivity is one of the main underlying mechanisms for a variety of esophageal disorders. In addition to functional esophageal disorders, such as functional chest pain (FCP), functional heartburn, reflux hypersensitivity (RH), globus sensation, and functional dysphagia, esophageal hypersensitivity has been suggested to play an important role in nonerosive reflux disease (NERD), and refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Esophageal hypersensitivity is not considered a distinct disorder but rather a potential mechanism for the development of various esophageal disorders.
