Abstract

After an introduction dealing with the concept of model in geophysics and ionospheric research, the chapter describes the different types of ionospheric models. It is followed by a historical view of the evolution of empirical models of the ionosphere with emphasis on the models of electron density. Finally, a more detailed description of the IRI and NeQuick models is given.
