Abstract

This section explores ways to characterize day-to-day variability of the ionosphere in quantitative ways. Three main drivers of variability are defined and assigned average magnitudes from past statistical studies. Complexity arises from simultaneous competing influences from above (solar photons and solar wind) and below (troposphere/stratosphere meteorology). Limits to predictability for a complex system are proposed.
