Abstract

The derivative of a function is a measure of how rapidly the dependent variable changes with changes in the value of the independent variable. The derivative of a function is defined by a mathematical limit. The derivatives of many simple functions can be obtained by applying few simple rules, either separately or in combination. A finite increment in a dependent variable, Δy, can sometimes be calculated approximately from the derivative the formula. A relative minimum or maximum value of a variable y(x) is found at a point where dy/dx=0. At an inflection point, the curvature changes sign.
