Abstract

Controlled substances are widely used in nonclinical research. Controlled substances are subject to multiple local, state, and federal laws and regulations, which carry civil, administrative, or criminal penalties for noncompliance. Controlled substance laws and regulations are complex and can become a compliance challenge when applied to multidisciplinary or decentralized institutions. As a result, institutions must provide leadership and engage institutional stakeholders to develop policies and practices to maintain controlled substance regulatory compliance, protect public health, and prevent diversion.
