Abstract

Communication matters in all environments in which messages are sent, received, and interpreted. The right number of messages must be created and messages must be understandable. Communication matters in all environments in which messages are sent, received, and interpreted. Companies are dependent on communications concerning company matters, work and work relations, and communication between all stakeholders. Communication is performed at many different levels and as one-way, two-way, or multiway communication. This chapter delineates the rules of good communication in an oral, highlighting the importance of each step in a presentation, i.e. organization, using effective presentation materials, delivering the message, and managing questions and answers. Subsequently, it deals with the written form of presentation, highlighting the importance of organization, using effective printed materials, editing, and publishing. Several personal factors influence both written and oral communication. These include: communication style, level of listening that takes place, perception, and level of conflict resolution. Also, communication by body language can affect the message and requires that a “body” is present to deliver or receive the message. Following this, the study describes the importance of interpersonal relationships. Under this, it considers active listening, understanding communication styles, and resolving conflicts. Finally, a questionnaire to assess one's effectiveness in communicating is presented.
