Abstract
In this chapter, the basic concepts of coding theory are provided. Only topics from classical error correction important in quantum error correction are covered. The chapter starts with the channel coding preliminaries, in particular with basic definitions, channel models, concept of channel capacity and statement of channel coding theorem. Next, basics of linear block codes (LBCs), such as definition of generator and parity-check matrices, syndrome decoding, distance properties of LBCs, and some important coding bounds are described. Further, the cyclic codes are introduced. The incoming section is devoted BCH codes. Then the RS codes, concatenated and product codes are described. After a short summary section, a set of problems is provided for readers to get a deeper understanding of classical error correction.
