Abstract

Biological monitoring using aquatic organisms is becoming a very much used tool for assessing river health. Its use began at the end of the last century in Latin America. This chapter presents the successful use of this tool in Argentina, Chile, and Costa Rica, in order to measure agricultural impacts on river water quality. Apple orchards and eucalyptus and banana plantations are presented as study models. The methodologies used for these analyses represent a simple, quick, efficient, and cheap tool for environmental impact studies.
