Abstract
A variety of analysis methods have been developed for the identification and quantitative analysis of beryllium and beryllium compounds. The current state-of-the-art for most metal analysis and, in particular beryllium analysis, is inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) [also known as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)] and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This chapter provides an overview of ICP-AES and ICP-MS as they relate to the identification and quantitative analysis of metals and in particular beryllium. Issues discussed include: instrumentation available; interferences such as spectral, matrix, and physical interferents; and specific considerations when working with beryllium.
