Abstract
This chapter addresses the main aspects of sustainable recycling of batteries by remanufacturing them for high-performance electronic devices, energy distribution, and electric vehicles. The evolution of electronics and how they became more relevant and intrinsically related to virtually every sector is discussed first. The second session provides an overview of the global market for battery materials and the main aspects of a profitable recycling process. The third session of this chapter emphasizes the main strategies used to recycle batteries components, i.e., cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, and binders which are mostly pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of each process in recycling technologies are discussed to provide a better understanding of these processes and provide guidelines for successfully using these technologies for large-scale production in a sustainable way.
