Abstract

Spray drying is the process of creating useful powders from a liquid slurry for a vast variety of industry including food, flavors, fine chemical, microbial, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing. Critical to spray drying is atomization of a liquid feed stock and precise application of system thermodynamics using automated process control techniques to produce high-quality marketable products. Evolutions in the understanding and techniques of feedstock formulation and preparation, atomization, electrostatic spray drying, vessel and process design, automatic process control, and even the selection of drying gas have been instrumental in improving product quality and overall drying efficiency. Correct application of these generates stable, free-flowing, dry powders with a customizable morphology that promotes useful characteristics for dispersion or rehydration.
