Abstract
The PIC mid-range MCUs provide 10-bit analogue input conversion. Eight-bit values may be used if the higher precision is not needed. An external reference voltage may be needed to set the conversion range. Op-amp-based external interfacing circuits may be needed to condition the signal, providing gain, offset and bandwidth control. The transient and frequency response of the signal measurement system must be considered and the most suitable op-amp type selected. Comparator inputs allow simple direct analogue voltage levels to be compared. Some typical analogue applications are outlined, such as an instrumentation amplifier, current loop interface, logarithmic amplifier, alternating signal frequency and amplitude measurement, and audio frequency sampling.
