Abstract

Reactive oxygen species are not only inevitable by-products of the mitochondrial respiratory chain but also vital factors in homeostasis and regulation of intracellular redox signaling pathways. The theory of oxidative stress of aging has long been the dominant theory of why we age and die. However, several studies conducted in the last decades have raised doubts about its importance in determining the aging process and therefore the lifespan. After briefly discussing these points, taking into account the critical role that gut microbiota and intestinal barrier play in aging and health, in this chapter we discuss ROS interaction with gut barrier, inflammation, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota.
