Abstract

After completion of phase I therapy, which consists of patient education, biofilm control and thorough root therapy, the involved periodontal areas are reevaluated. Many cases may not require phase II therapy when gingival tissue shrinkage that occurs due to resolution of inflammation, eliminates or reduces the periodontal pockets. Phase II or surgical phase of therapy becomes necessary when access for root therapy is required or correction of anatomic or morphologic defects is necessary. Placement of dental implants can be part of this phase of periodontal therapy.
