Abstract

The pinch design method (PDM) is used in this chapter to analyze potential energy savings in a hydro-cracking process from Jordan Petroleum Refinery Co. The results obtained show that elimination of heating utility can be achieved if six more units are added. Step-by-step energy relaxation shows that about 50% energy savings can be achieved if only one heat exchanger is added. Heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) is an important aspect of chemical process design. The objective of HENS involves the placement of heat exchangers to heat the cold streams and to cool the hot streams in a process in such a way as to minimize total costs such as capital and operating costs expressed as annual charges.
