Abstract

The neuromuscular junction, i.e. the synapse between motor neurons and muscle fibers, plays an obvious, crucial role in the biology of muscle. This chapter presents a perspective on some of these roles, the structure of the synapse, its formation and modification during development, growth, and aging, the influences of synaptic activity, the repair/re-establishment of the synapse following nerve damage, and the activities of the glia located at the synapse.
