Abstract

Publisher Summary For the assessment of the environmental significance and potential health hazards associated with exposure to environmental pollutants, detailed studies of physical and chemical properties are required. It is these properties that determine the route and biological consequences of exposure. The aerodynamic behavior of aerosols released during coal combustion will determine the potential for atmospheric transport and subsequent human exposure. Large particles escaping the power plant's control technology will fall out near the plant, ultimately resulting in general population exposure by ingestion of agricultural products or water. This chapter reviews the size dependence of physical and chemical properties of coal fly ash.
