Abstract

As with any new process, there are certain parameters, both operational and environmental, that must be determined in the developmental stage prior to construction of commercial plants. This chapter describes the techniques and procedures used to measure some of these parameters. It explores the process of underground coal gasification test (UCG). Defining the qualitative and quantitative nature of the materials found in the product stream from an UCG plays an important role in developing the technology. There are various approaches to gasifying a coal seam, but only one has been demonstrated in the United States by way of a field test. The technique is called the linked vertical well (LVW) process. The LVW process is a two-step operation, which first involves preparing the coal seam for gasification. This preparation is to provide the necessary permeability that a virgin coal seam lacks.
