Abstract
This chapter provides a list of responsibilities of ship surveyors with regard to Lloyds surveyors, and maritime department for transport surveyors. Ship surveyors ensure that stability of motions and stability of ship structures are of the right standards. In the UK, Lloyds surveyors look after the strength of the ship while the maritime department for transport surveyors look after the safety of ships. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) ensures that the ship is up to acceptable safety standards. Apart from safety of life at sea (SOLAS) regulations, the IMO maritime safety committee deal with stability and load lines and fishing vessel safety, carriage of dangerous goods, safety of navigation, radio communications, search and rescue, fire protection, and ship design and equipment. One major work recently produced by IMO is the international code for the safe carriage of grain in bulk, abbreviated to international grain code. IMO deals with environment protection and pollution prevention.
