Abstract

Mucosal vaccines are typically designed to induce protective immunity against a pathogen. Given the emerging role for the microbiome in multiple immune-mediated diseases, the opportunity exists to manipulate the microbiome or the host response to it through immunization. In this chapter, we will review mucosal immunological homeostasis and the local microbiota and will propose strategies that may provide novel targets for active or passive mucosal immunization in order to ameliorate mucosal inflammation.
