Abstract

This chapter explores the various types of industrial valves and their use in petro-chemical facilities. Valve characteristics, including rising and nonrising stems, dimensions and installation requirements; valve applications for liquid, gas, and vapor service and drawing symbols are presented for the following valves; gate, globe, angle, check, ball, plug, butterfly, relief, and control. Step-by-step drawing instructions are provided for a single-line and double-line gate valves. The four different types of valves used in a manifold control station are listed as well as their role in the control loop is explained. Valve operators, both manual and automatic, are discussed. A graphical representation for the installation of valves, including handwheel orientations and height guidelines, is provided for both horizontal and vertical valve stems. Dimensioning charts for flanged 150#, 300#, and 600# gate, globe, and check valves are provided.
