Abstract

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major problem worldwide, which threatens health and negatively affects the livelihood of millions of people. The prevalence of STDs, such as gonorrhea, and the resultant antimicrobial resistance make it imperative to develop novel therapies for the treatment of the diseases. Since medicinal plants have been utilized in the treatment of diseases for centuries and consist of bioactive compounds, they are probable candidates for drug development. In this review, we discuss some of the medicinal plants used in South African traditional medicine for the treatment of gonorrhea and other STDs. Further insight into the biological and pharmacological effects of these plants is given.
