Abstract

This chapter discusses the physical and chemical properties of Earth's core, including the temperature, seismic structure, and the composition. It includes new data from high-pressure experimental and theoretical studies related to the anisotropy of the inner core and the possibility that the inner core rotates at a rate different from the mantle. It also includes a discussion of the age of the core and generation of Earth's magnetic field by a geodynamo in the outer core. New information is presented on how the geodynamo is powered and the causes of magnetic reversals. And finally a discussion of the origin, growth, and evolution of the core is included.
