Abstract
The supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction process is relatively straightforward in theory, with the fundamental concept being to replace the organic solvents used in previous techniques with the supercritical fluid solvent. One of the key advantages of using supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent is its capacity to function at low temperatures and hence cope with thermo-sensitive active components. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction technology is emerging as a high-valued, green, and efficient extraction process with greater application as the food component business catches up with its materials engineering and pharmaceutical counterparts and grows beyond extraction. Traditional technologies fail or are unable to tackle concerns such as product purity, process efficiency, health, and environmental effect, while supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) extraction does.
