Abstract
Social media are changing the way in which romantic relationships are developed, maintained, and dissolved. People can become jealous if they see their partner interacting with potential romantic partners on social media. This can be especially problematic in long-distance relationships. Yet, social network sites such as Facebook and Instagram are seen as an acceptable way of monitoring the partner. A Valenzuela, Halpern, and Katz’s survey of married individuals shows that using social network sites is negatively correlated with marriage quality and happiness, and positively correlated with thinking about divorce. Facebook usage, particularly, has been related to physical and emotional cheating, jealousy, and breakups. This chapter discusses problems that social media cause in both romantic and friendship relationships.
