Abstract

Nanotechnology has finally and firmly emerged as the realm of drug delivery. Performances of intelligent drug delivery systems are continuously improved with the purpose to maximize therapeutic activity and to minimize undesirable side effects. Recent advances in material design and the emergence of new therapeutics are contributing to the development of more sophisticated systems. This chapter provides an overview on the relation between nanotechnology and drug delivery, various nanobased drug delivery systems being commercialized and undergoing clinical trials, recent advances in various nanobased drug delivery systems, principal challenges both from a manufacturing and regulatory perspective and safety issues in nanobased drug delivery systems.
