Abstract
This chapter addresses the preoperative assessment of surgical patients in terms of relevant history, including medication history and examination, as well as preoperative testing in order to assess risk of bleeding as well as take steps to minimize bleeding during the intraoperative and postoperative periods. Among preoperative testing, coagulation-based testing, blood bank testing and tests for liver and renal function are also discussed. Appropriate steps, such as holding various medications prior to surgery and administration of various blood products and other pharmacotherapeutic agents, are also addressed.
