Abstract

The source rocks of the Murzuq, Greater Ghadamis, Sirt Basin (onshore and offshore) and the Sabratah Basin, offshore north-west Libya, are described. In addition the potential source rocks of Cyrenaica and the Kufrah Basin are discussed. The Silurian Rhuddanian shales are the most significant in western Libya whilst the Campanian Sirt Formation comprises shales with the best source rock properties in the Sirt Basin, and in the adjacent offshore.
