Abstract

In this chapter, we discuss the study of new knowledge opportunities through open innovation to achieve environmental improvements. By studying the properties of such cooperation networks, we empirically analyze whether they are positively related to eco-innovation in traditional industries. We compare the results in two industries using data from Technological Innovation Panel (Panel de Innovación Tecnológica): agri-food, a manufacturing industry, and tourism, a service industry. Both industries have considerable economic weight in Spain. We confirm the importance of the depth of external relations to achieve environmental improvements but consider that each industry has a different strategic behavior toward eco-innovation, including those that produce similar products or services. This research highlights the importance of studying the depth and breadth of relations with external sources for environmental purposes, reaching different conclusions depending on the analyzed industry.
