Abstract
Diabetes is growing at epidemic proportions worldwide. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Diabetes and its microvascular and macrovascular complications represent a huge economic burden on the society. Despite the discovery and characterization of novel chemical entities targeting new pathways, the prevalence of diabetes is on the rise. Insulin resistance is a condition wherein the body’s response to insulin is impaired. Insulin resistance is a prediabetic condition that occurs long before full-blown diabetes. However, no therapeutic approaches exist to counter insulin resistance and preempt diabetes. In this context, nutritional supplements and natural products may find utility in improving insulin and thereby delay the progression to overt diabetes. Chromium is one such nutrient that has been shown to possess a number of beneficial cardiometabolic profiles. This mini-review focuses on the proposed cardiometabolic benefits of chromium and briefly discusses the potential mechanism by which chromium may mediate some of these effects.
