Abstract
Natural dyes are utilized in the coloring of textiles, drugs, cosmetics, etc. Owing to their nontoxic effects, they are widely used in cosmetic, food, and pharmaceutical industry. They have wide range of medicinal importance in pharmaceutical industry. There are clear evidences that some natural dyes by themselves have medicinal properties. Natural dyes are natural coloring entities that impart color and have health benefits. It is well known that these natural moieties possess antiinflammatory and anticarcinogenic activity, cardiovascular disease prevention, obesity control, and diabetes-reducing properties, all of which are more or less associated with their powerful antioxidant property. In this chapter, the diverse medical use of color-yielding plants has been presented. Emphasis has been laid on their eco-friendliness. Both the dye and dyed fabrics have been tested for eco-friendly parameters.
