Abstract

This chapter focuses on possible influences of laterality on talent identification and athlete development. Given the extensive time frame involved with talent development and many sports' increasing focus on early identification, we concentrate on young talented athletes during early stages of their sporting development. The interaction of laterality with previously identified primary (direct) and secondary (indirect) factors (Baker & Horton, 2004) affecting talent development will be discussed, and a closer look will be taken regarding whether left-handedness mitigates some of the selection biases known to exist in talent identification and development. Focusing on expertise research, the chapter highlights performance advantages of left-handed athletes and tries to explain left-hander overrepresentation in various fields of sporting activity. Advantages resulting from laterality will be considered from an evolutionary perspective and practical implications will be demonstrated on the basis of two case studies.
