Abstract

The work of farmers and farm laborers, migrant workers, nonfarm agricultural workers, food and restaurant industries, corporate and cooperative agriculture-related businesses and commodity organizations is an essential part of the food system. The changes in agriculture labor demographics since colonial times through today are presented. Throughout US history there have been controversial issues about agricultural unions and collective bargaining, undocumented workers and the role of government policy for agricultural labor. Most of these issues continue to be unresolved and debated. Examples of controversial topics related to agricultural workers are discussed. The contributions of agriculture-related industries to the US economy and range of employment opportunities are presented.
