Abstract

A record of wind fields inferred from reanalysis of past meteorological data is used to assess the potential source of electricity that could be realized by tapping this global wind resource. It is concluded that the source would be more than sufficient to satisfy current and potential future demands for global electricity, and the potential for energy in all forms. Particular attention is directed to applications in China and in the United States, respectively, the world’s largest and second-largest sources of greenhouse gases. Limitations are discussed with respect to the ultimate potential for extraction of power from wind.
