Abstract

The porous-layer open-tubular (PLOT) columns proposed by Golay currently replace traditional packed columns. Nowadays, these are powerful tools frequently used in gas chromatography for analyses of fixed gases, light hydrocarbons, and volatile solvents. In this article, the history of the development of PLOT columns is reviewed. The method of their preparation, information about their quality, and most importantly the layer stability are discussed. In addition, the practical aspects of their use, such as retention mechanisms, as well as their limitations and applications are discussed. The review presented in this article concerns mostly the commercially available PLOT columns.
