Abstract

The zone between the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) and the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) is occupied by the Siwaliks. The Subathu Group is thrust over the Siwaliks along the MBT. In between the MBT and the Main Central Thrust (MCT) occur a number of thrusts: the Ramgarh Thrust, North and South Almora Thrusts, Tons Thrust, Munsiari Thrust of Valdiya, 1980a, and MCT of Heim and Gansser, 1939. Also, a number of klippen occur in the zone between the MBT and the MCT. The Higher Himalayan Crystallines (HHC) or the Vaikritas pass northward to the Maleri and the South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS), which marks the boundary between the metamorphics and the Tethyan sedimentaries. Study of metamorphism in the MCT zone and the HHC or the Vaikritas indicates presence of two events of metamorphism in the sequences with varying intensity and character of metamorphism.
