Abstract

Executive functions (EFs) play a fundamental, yet poorly understood, role in neurocognitive aging. The overarching goal of this chapter is to consider both sides of that statement. That is, we will review behavioral and neuroimaging evidence indicating the centrality of executive functioning to cognitive aging, and we will also delineate some of the major barriers or puzzles that challenge a coherent and thorough account of the role of EF in aging. Finally, we will consider how and to what extent declines in EFs affect typical day-to-day activities of older adults.
