Abstract
This chapter deals with the continuum elasticity theory of solids, another basic property that needs attention. As the simplest and oldest approximation, a solid can be assumed to be a homogeneous and continuous material. The strain and stress in a solid have been defined in the elastic continuum theory. The elastic constants of a solid have been defined in the linear approximation (Hooke’s law). The explicit calculation of elastic constants in a cubic crystal has been presented. The expressions for elastic the energy density and bulk modulus in cubic crystals have been derived. The general equation for elastic waves in solids has been derived and applied to find the velocity of waves propagating in high-symmetry directions. The elastic isotropy and the principle involved in the determination of elastic constants are presented in brief.
