Abstract

Bézier surfaces and their description play a critical role in design and manufacturing. They also play an important role in the representation of data obtained from medical, geological, physical, and other natural phenomena. In design and engineering, the traditional way of representing a surface is to use multiple orthogonal projections. The methods of parametric surface description are most conveniently described in terms of the mapping of a two-parameter planar surface in parametric space into three-dimensional object space. It is necessary to transform a Bézier surface into an alternate surface description, such as a Coons surface. The chapter explains the relationship between a bicubic Bézier and a bicubic Coons surface.
