Abstract

This chapter discusses the bending theory for shells of revolution under axisymmetric load. Because of symmetry, the component of load in the x direction must vanish, that is, X = 0, and that the shear stress resultants N φθ and N θφ must also vanish. Terms involving differentiation with respect to θ cannot exist because of symmetry. As there is no variation of Nθ in the x direction and as X is zero, equilibrium in the x direction is identically satisfied. As the applied load on the shell of revolution is axisymmetric, the displacement of the shell surface because of this load will be axisymmetrical.
