Abstract

Bioremediation is a technology that utilizes microorganisms by exploiting their metabolic and enzymatic capabilities by detoxifying or mineralizing and finally degrading hazardous organic components to convert them into innocuous constituents. It plays a significant role in hazardous waste management, owing to its merits such as being eco-friendly, energy-efficient, relatively low cost, and its potential effectiveness. Another advantage is the generation of nonharmful end-products such as carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen that can easily get assimilated into the nature. Bioremediation can be performed in situ or ex situ.
