Abstract
Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) play essential roles during skeletal development and in the regulation of postnatal chondrogenesis and osteogenesis. This chapter updates our current knowledge of the expression of FGFs and FGF receptors (FGFRs) during development and postnatal skeletogenesis, describes the role of FGFs in the regulation of bone and other tissues, and reviews the functions of FGF/FGFR signaling in skeletal growth, bone formation and resorption, bone remodeling, and repair. We also update the mechanisms by which mutations in FGFRs induce abnormalities in chondrogenesis and osteogenesis in skeletal dysplasias and review how this knowledge may be exploited to treat genetic bone diseases associated with FGFR mutations.
