Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the methods for the determination of tin from silicate rock. The reagents used for the determination of tin include cacotheline, gallein, 8-hydroxyquinoline, haematoxylin, diethyldithiocarbamate, phenylfluorone, dithiol, methyl violet, catechol violet, and salicylideneamino-2-thiophenol. The chapter discusses the spectrophotometric determination of tin using catechol violet. In the procedure, silica is removed by evaporation with hydrofluoric acid. Any cassiterite in the acid-insoluble residue is recovered by fusion with sodium peroxide. Tin present in solution is concentrated by the extraction of stannic bromide into toluene solution. The determination of tin completes spectrophotometrically with the use of catechol violet. Salicylideneamino-2-thiophenol is one of the most valuable reagents for tin. It is easy to prepare and gives a yellow-color complex with tin that can be extracted into any of a number of organic solvents for photometric measurement. The maximum optical density occurs at a wavelength of 415 nm.
