Abstract

Nasogastric tube and feeding tube placement and replacement are common procedures in the emergency department. Nasogastric tube placement is at times very challenging and procedural complications can be serious. Nasoenteral tube placement has particular additional challenges and is particularly risky when it fails, as nasoenteral tubes are used for instillation. Gastrostomy, jejunostomy, esophagostomy, and pharyngostomy tube replacement are also covered. This chapter discusses indications and contraindications, preparation, performance techniques, troubleshooting, securing, and verification techniques for nasogastric and feeding tube procedures from the perspective of an emergency medicine physician.
