Abstract

An immutable sense of one being male or female is biologically based. While it is consistent with genital anatomy in most persons, a significant number of individuals' gender identity is discordant with natal sex. Transgenderism can occur without a concurrent intersex condition and is independent of sexual preference. The genesis of gender dysphoria may relate to the temporal discrepancy between the formation of the genital anatomy in the first 2 months of pregnancy and the sexual differentiation of the brain in the second half of pregnancy. The two processes may involve different mechanisms.
